Ruaha National Park is the second largest national park in Tanzania covering an area of 22,000 square kilometres. It is located in the southwestern part of the country. The park has not gained the fame it deserves, being isolated from any of the major cities and international airports. Happily, the result of this is much more of an off-the-beaten-track experience for those who do visit.

A meeting of North and South

The Ruaha National Park covers vast expanses of varied habitats, from baobab country, savannah and miombo woodland to forested rocky hills. Visitors can observe a unique transition in environment at this latitude, as the typical acacia woodland of Eastern Africa blends into the miombo forests of Southern Africa. The park has an elaborate river system that is dominated by the Ruaha river, which sustains abundant wildlife.

Everything is larger here

One of the park’s major highlights is the large number of predators that it is home to: lions, leopard, cheetah and hunting dogs. Also referred to as African wild dogs, they are formidable predators that hunt in packs. Hunting dogs display high levels of cooperation in caring for the sick and wounded among them. Ruaha National Park has one of the largest populations of African Wild Dogs on earth. Sighting this endangered species here is common. The elusive lesser kudu and greater kudu can be found here, along with the rare sable and roan antelopes. The Ruaha river offers year around water supply and sustains a large population of elephants (numbering over 10,000). Other common sightings include waterbuck, bushbuck, impala and large buffalo herds.

Nestled between Udzungwa Mountains National Park and Nyerere National Park, Mikumi is one of the most scenic parks in Tanzania. The rolling hills dotted by trees and vast expanses of grassland make for beautiful photos and beautiful memories. The park is populated with elephants, leopards, giraffes, buffalos, zebras, lions, wildebeest, various antelope species and some 400 bird species. In the north of the park there are hippo pools. Apart from the resident hippo population, the pools attract a lot of activity from the wildlife, especially during the dry season as they guarantee water for most of the antelopes and predators. The park is an exciting attraction that offers the prospect of truly memorable game sightings.

Nyerere National Park was formerly called “Selous Game Reserve,” and in 2019 it gained national park status. It is the largest national park in Africa. Covering an area of 30000 square kilometres, it is the size of some small European countries. This park’s history and sense of mystique adds to its attractions. It was named after Fredrick Courtney Selous, a well renowned explorer and British Army Officer in the Royal Fusiliers. Selous was killed in combat along the Rufiji River, which flows through the Park. Today, it takes its name from Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, widely viewed as the father of the modern nation-state.

A river runs through it

The defining feature of Nyerere National Park is the river systems that flow into it from the surrounding highlands. As these rivers lose altitude, they move towards each other and convene to become the Rufiji river. The Rufiji meanders its way towards the Indian ocean, and over time, this massive body of water has chiselled features into the land such as gorges, lakes, swamps and marshes, all of which make for a very dramatic landscape. The river systems attract and sustain a diverse range of wildlife and vegetation. Nyerere National Park is one of the few places in Tanzania where it is possible to go on a boat safari along the river and its tributaries, an incredible experience that gives a unique perspective on the wildlife.

Plenty to see

The varying vegetation zones add a whole other dimension of flora, ranging from dense thickets to open wooded grassland scattered with palm trees. In terms of wildlife, one of the main attractions is the chance to see hunting dogs, which have become rare in other parks. Sightings of large predators like lions, leopards and hyenas are common in this park. The park also boasts a large population of African elephants, hippopotami, crocodiles and cape buffalo, along with an impressive number of antelopes and gazelles.

Tarangire National Park is named after the Tarangire river, which is perennial water source which guarantees supply throughout the year. The park boasts one of the heaviest concentrations of elephants in Tanzania. On game drive circuits along the river, visitors often encounter herds of elephant as they move to and from the water. This offers our clients spectacular views of the herds as they socialize and interact.

Apart from elephants, the river sustains a large variety of herbivores including buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, and several gazelle species. The park is also home to a substantial population of predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas. It encompasses 2900 square kilometers of unique landscape dominated by mammoth, hard-wearing baobab trees which have become iconic of the park.

Oluduvai Gorge was made famous by the excavation work carried out by Louis and Mary Leakey in the 1950s, and their later discovery of Australopithecus boisei, “the nutcracker man”. The specimen is believed to be 1.7 million years old, and a crucial link in understanding the development of early humans. This groundbreaking discovery, among several others in the field of paleoanthropology, earnt the site the moniker “The Cradle of Mankind”. The gorge itself is named for the Maasai word for wild sisal, “oldupaai”. The first European to discover the site was German entomologist Professor Kattwinkel, who was actually more interested in the butterflies of the area. Fortuitously, he found fossil remains and revealed the site’s potential for archeological excavation, which continues to this day.

Lake Manyara is a park that offers rich and diverse game viewing within a reasonably small area. From the thick ground-water forest found at the park entrance to the more arid acacia woodland in the south. It is one of the best areas for elephant viewing in Tanzania, close encounters are very common. The centerpiece of the park is its namesake: the lake which covers 70% of the park area. While spotting cats in Manyara is not so common due to the thick brush and heavily forested areas, game drives along the lake shore are rewarding and memorable because the wildlife is abundant and diverse. The birdlife here is exceptional.

Ngorongoro Crater is a unique kind of crater known as a caldera. It is the aftereffect of a volcanic collapse – an implosion rather than explosion – some two million years ago. Ecologically, Ngorongoro covers an area of 8300 square kilometers with varied terrain and altitudes. This variation results in diverse and distinct habitats from grassy plains to mountain forest. The Crater itself measures 18 kilometers in diameter on average, and has a vertical drop of approximately 700 meters. As well as being home to 25000 large animals it forms part of the Serengeti-Ngorongoro-Masai Mara Ecosystem. This ecosystem allows for the free movement of a further 1.5 million animals in their continuous search for green pastures – a journey known as the migration.

Serengeti National Park derives its name from the Maasai word, “siringitu”, meaning “endless plain”. The Serengeti is located along the East African Rift Valley and covers an area of 14800 square kilometres.

Serengeti consists of mostly grass plains in the South and interspersed river systems and acacia woodland in the North. These rich grass plains are a result of ash deposited by volcanic activity along the Rift Valley, and they serve as home to some 3 million animals. The Serengeti has the largest documented population of large predators (lions, leopards, cheetah, hyenas and wild dogs). Within these grass plains the scattered kopjes – large metamorphic rock boulders or outcrops – act as a haven for animals from grass fires, predators and the heat.

Serengeti National Park

The Great Migration is one of the more impressive sights that the Serengeti has to offer. Tourists visit to bear witness to key events along this journey, such as calving season and the Mara river crossing.  The Migration is a test of endurance for the animals, selecting the strong to survive and reproduce. Over the years Serengeti National Park has been featured a in several Disney movies and wildlife documentaries, gaining much exposure.

Serengeti Highlights

  • Largest population of large predators on earth (Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Hyenas)
  • The Great Wildebeest migration.
  • Elephants, Buffalo, Gazelles, Antelopes, and over 500 bird species.

Serengeti Facts

  • 15,000 square kilometres
  • Established in 1951
  • UNESCO world heritage site
  • Over 3 million animals

Serengeti Geography

  • Treeless grass plains (south Serengeti)
  • Acacia Woodland (north Serengeti)
  • Mara, Grumeti, Mbalageti and Seronera river systems
  • Kopjes (rock outcroppings)

How to get there

  • By road, the Serengeti is usually part of the northern tour package.
  • By bush plane; there are several flights in and out of the Serengeti. From Arusha it’s a 90 minutes flight to the Serengeti.
